Metaphase is the 'M' in "PMAT." The 'M' also stands for "Middle." The reason that it is called middle is because the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell. The nucleus has disappeared, allowing the chromosomes out of the nucleus so that they are able to line up in the middle of the cell. The chromosomes are attached to 2 spindle fibers; one on each side.
